Hamburg (Germany) - basic information

Hamburg is the second largest city in the country and the largest port in Germany, located in the north of the country on the Elbe River. It has the status of both a free city and a federal state of Germany. It is an important industrial center, especially in the fields of electronics, electrical engineering, oil refining and the food industry. Hamburg is also a financial center, a road and rail hub, the largest port in the country and one of the largest in the world.

History
The city was founded in the 9th century by Charlemagne. The beginning of the town was the church, built in 818, built on the remains of the original 4th century settlement. The Saxons settled in these areas, therefore, Saxon influences are noted in the architecture and culture of the city. Initially, the wooden defensive fortress was burned down by the Slavs, but it was rebuilt and became increasingly famous due to the river, which is an excellent transport route. In the Middle Ages, the city was one of the most important members of the Hanseatic League, which further influenced the prosperity of trade.

Monuments
The old historic city - mostly destroyed as a result of the Allied raid on July 27, 1943 (more than 40,000 casualties) - is surrounded by modern residential areas integrated into forested areas. Hamburg's historic center is located between the main station and Gansemarkt Square. The most characteristic building in Hamburg is definitely St. Michael's Church. The church tower, towering over the city, has a height of 132 m and 453 steps lead to it. From the platform at the top, you can see a great panorama of the city with the port.

Port district
A special place is occupied by the Granary Speicherstadt harbor, located between Deichtorhallen and Baumwall. Century-old red buildings reign here, even seven-storey buildings with Gothic towers and interesting facades. This is the main attraction of the port. The warehouses are still one of the largest warehouses for coffee, cocoa, rugs and other valuable materials.

The Green Hamburg
The Alsterpark is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the city. It lies on the banks of a short tributary of the Elbe River called the Alster. There are also two lakes here: the larger Ausenalster and the smaller Binnenalster. The charming place is full of lush greenery, among which you can sunbathe or just relax in silence. You can walk along the 1.5 km long promenade or find many cafes, restaurants or rent a boat and swim. Hamburg also has Planten un Bloemen, a park with a botanical garden, a greenhouse and the largest Japanese garden in Europe. There is also a Stadtpark for active people, that is, a natural urban park filled with meadows and playgrounds for football or jogging. The park also has a playground and a swimming pool.
